Shakespeare
Why Study Shakespeare? Read this great article!
Charlotte Mason's own words about Shakespeare
Charlotte Mason didn't recommend Shakespeare until around age 9-10 ( About Grade 4). At http://www.amblesideonline.org/ they schedule retellings of Shakespeare's plays as an introduction to the main characters of each story. I think this benefits the younger children and prepares them for the meaty material in the real scripts. They schedule Tales from Shakespeare by Charles and Mary Lamb.
This is a nice version and is available for your Kindle as well.
Teaching at Spread the Feast Co-op:
During Co-op we will be introducing the poet/playwright with the use of Biographies/picture books and then following that with retellings by Bruce Coville and others. We might try reading selected scenes from the actual plays as well and then doing a bit of acting out of the scene. This will involve reading it out loud as a group and narrating the story or acting it out to help the children process the story.
When we read a biography, we read a selected section, about 10 minutes and then have the kids narrate back what was read.
